Jaden Smith,16, the young Hollywood star who has garnered much attention lately, (i.e. prom with Amandla Stenberg, his attachment to Kylie Jenner, and his notorious tweets that may be read as incredibly profound or incredibly ridiculous. This time, the young actor/musician will get attention for his latest role; a teenage graffiti artist called Marcus “Dizzee” Kipling in Baz Luhrman’s The Get Down. It will follow a group of teens from the Bronx in the 1970’s. The series will be available for streaming on the ever popular cite Netflix.
Baz Luhrman is otherwise known for his films Moulin Rouge, Romeo + Juliet, Australia, and most recently The Great Gatsby.
In a statement, the director said “We as an audience have known Jaden since he was very young.” He continued, “Recently, Jaden has been seeking diverse and challenging roles and this is a testament to his passion to grow in the craft. In the short time he has joined our acting family, he has begun developing his The Get Down skill set, even taking lessons from the legendary graffiti artist Lady Pink of ‘Wild Style’ fame, as well as steeping himself in the history and culture of the Bronx. We’re all very happy with the casting of Jaden in the role of ‘Dizzee’ Kipling, and with his addition, the Kipling family cast is now complete.”
This may be a star making film, as Jaden Smith is commonly perceived as his enormously famous father’s son. Maybe this will be his break.
